While it is known that people will generally gravitate towards those who are similar to them, it must also be known that people do have a tendency to become rigid about this.
You see, humans are naturally tribal so we will look out for the best interests of our said group because of the sense of belonging granted by this. This means that we’ll come up with methods of foraging, lifestyle and daily living so to speak. This is where culture comes in.
When we are spending too much time along people like us, our perception of what should be normal will become like theirs.
This is where the notions of purity starts to emerge.
So when we see a group different to us, we start to feel threatened thus become defensive. We then assess by how much this group is a threat and start to resist.
This is where fear comes in.
When we see this group start doing better than the said default group, this fear starts to escalate further.
This is where competition comes in.
Racism does not have its roots in the European colonial period. It’s root goes back much further than that. Think about our primordial times when we were still at the mercy of nature in all its unpredictable splendour then you will begin to see the pattern.
The nature of tribalism is that it serves to have a group dynamic enforced for purposes of protection and survival. This in turn becomes a need to belong, to thrive and so on. So when we see another group, we will react because of our innate fears and these fears stem from a lack of insight, communication and experience.
Tribalism does however gives us the benefit of cultural creativity and sense of place. Unfortunately, it also helps to foster an environment governed by insular and provincial mindsets. This is what hampers our ability to understand the differences we are bound to encounter.
This leads us to feel this need to dominate and destroy others that stands in our way.
While the benefit of technology has brought us much closer to each other than ever before because of the immediacy it brings to communities beyond our own. This allows us to see our differences for what they are instead of how we envision them to be. This is what allowed for our advancement as a species.
War and conquest stunts our growth more than we realize so when we go on having others killed and maimed, we not only have another community stopped in their tracks, we also stop a flow of ideas, beliefs and thought that would have been more helpful in the first place. Thus the cycle repeats again.
With modern technology, we not only improve our ability to solve conflict, it also allows us to build better relations with those different to us. This leads to more growth and more stimulation. That in turn leads to a better society.
Racism is tribalism and tribalism is inherently evil.
It leads to more greed and destruction.
That is why racism is wrong.
We are always going to have our differences.
